Starting Out Safely
Road trauma is the leading cause of death and disabling injury of babies and children in Australia.
By using the correct child car seat for the size of the child we can save lives and reduce injuries. Many parents believe that if they follow the law on child car seats they are keeping their children safe. We know that we can do far more to provide the maximum protection for our children than the minimum the law requires.
By providing accurate and timely information to parents on the correct use of child car seats to professionals who support our most vulnerable road users we can change behaviour and improve outcomes for families involved in a crash.
The Starting Out Safely program is Victoria’s early childhood road safety education program and is funded to deliver child restraint information sessions to ante natal and maternal child health nurses, midwives, child protection workers, family day care services, new arrival programs and family support workers.
We Are Family
The ‘We Are Family’ program is a means of informing expectant parents of the potential risks and provides them with the knowledge, skills and strategies to ensure that the welcoming of their baby is not only a physically and emotionally enriching one, but importantly a safe one as well.
This program will be available to all Maternity Hospitals and Maternal Child Centres FREE of charge as part of Victorian government’s on-going commitment to Responsible Pet Ownership.
‘We Are Family’ program focusses on families with children in the 0 to 4-year age group. Its key messages focus on:
‘We Are Family’ helps to educate expectant parents on how they can prepare the home environment and train their pets to ensure appropriate behaviours are in place prior to the baby’s arrival.
